Crisis Averted

I almost had a bit of a meltdown today. I was installing wordpress behind a client’s current website so that they could see what was going on and the new website could be built while the old one was still up and running.

Because of who they hosted through I couldn’t get the necessary database info I needed, therefore I had to use the hosting auto-installer. I’m never keen on using these as I like to be able to see and control what I upload. My fears and doubts were totally justified. Wordpress had uploaded OK and I accessed the dashboard easily. I then went to the current website, which was in the main web folder, and was horrified to get a 403 Forbidden error. What had I done? Arghhhh.

Racking my brains I started checking over everything, no I hadn’t deleted any necessary files, all the website pages were there OK. Oh hell. Then I decided to check the .htaccess file in the main web folder. Sure enough, there was a line to do with wordpress there – so I deleted the line and crossed my fingers. Relief, the current website was showing up again. For some reason, installing wordpress via the auto-install added a line to the .htaccess in the main folder, as well as the .htaccess file in the wordpress folder which broke the website. Did I mention I hate using auto-installers?

Anyway, the crisis was dealt with and all is well with the world. I went to the network lunch I was booked onto with a clear and happy mind.
